A closed universe is one where the total density of matter is sufficient to eventually stop the expansion and cause it to collapse back in on itself.	An open universe is one where the total density of matter is too low to stop the expansion, leading it to continue indefinitely.
A closed universe is often described as having a spherical shape.	An open universe is often described as having a hyperbolic shape.
A closed universe has a density greater than the critical density needed to halt expansion.	An open universe has a density less than the critical density, allowing continual expansion.
In a closed universe, the universe will eventually stop expanding and start contracting, leading to a "Big Crunch."	In an open universe, the universe will keep expanding forever, resulting in a "Big Freeze."
