Solution

The differences between reflection of light and total internal reflection of light are as follows:

Reflection of lightTotal internal reflection of light
  • Reflection of Light refers to the change in direction of a light ray when it strikes a surface and bounces back into the same medium
  • Total Internal Reflection (TIR) is a specific case of reflection that occurs when light travels from a denser medium to a less dense medium and strikes the boundary at an angle greater than a certain critical angle.
  • It does not require any specific angle.

  • It requires angle of incidence to be greater than critical angle
  • This reflection causes the light to lose its brightness.
  • There is no change in brightness after reflection
  • It is applicable in mirrors and every day reflective surfaces.
  • It is applicable in optical fibers, diamonds etc.
