Four students A, B, C, and D are allowed to carry out decomposition reactions in the laboratory. All of them perform it differently as given below.

  1. Student A burnt magnesium (Mg) ribbon
  2. Student B mixed Zn in FeSO4 solution
  3. Student C heated KClO3 in a hard glass test tube
  4. Student D mixed Zn and HCl solution

Which student followed the correct procedure? Write the balanced chemical reaction of that process.

Solution

Here,

Student C is correct.

When potassium chlorate is heated in a hard glass test tube, it forms potassium chloride and oxygen. Magnesium dioxide can be used as catalyst.

This is a decomposition reaction. Balanced chemical reaction:

\(\rm 2KClO_{3}\) → \(\rm 2KCl\) + \(\rm 3O_{2}\)
