Solution

Induced ripening is a method of artificially ripening matured fruits using chemicals such as calcium carbide, ethylene gas and ethephon.

Fruits can be ripened artificially by:

  1. Ethylene Gas: Ethylene is a natural plant hormone produced by fruits as they ripen, and it can be produced artificially and used to ripen fruits quickly. Fruits are exposed to ethylene in ripening chambers to speed up natural ripening
  2. Calcium Carbide: Sometimes used to release acetylene gas, though it’s unsafe and restricted in many areas due to formation of carcinogenic compounds.
  3. Temperature Control: Placing fruits in warmer conditions, like a sunny spot to accelerate ripening.
  4. Paper Bag Method: Putting fruits in a paper bag with a ripe banana or apple to trap ethylene gas and quicken ripening.
